Usually by their 50s, women are in menopause or at least very close to reaching menopause. This “fabulous 50s” decade is when women start to feel like they are aggressively aging… but only if their symptoms are not caught and dealt with by medical professionals.
Women in their 50s have some common — and really concerning — complaints: Their skin starts to look really weathered and tired. Their bodies are changing. Many are experiencing vaginal dryness, painful sex, hot flashes, lack of sleep. In short, they are feeling “old.”
The flip side of this picture is that someone who is being actively managed through hormone therapy will not have to suffer like this, and they can have their vitality maintained. If this is the case, the 50s can be a really exciting decade. Imagine this: In your fifties, you’ve got confidence. You’ve got less or declining job and kid pressures. You’ve got more time. If you’re maintaining your hormones, the vitality of your youth is being maintained, and all of the sudden, your 50s are a really empowering and enjoyable time.
It’s not that we’re not aging. We’re simply hanging onto our youth from a physical, psychological and physiologic standpoint. The key to aging gracefully and enjoying your 50s is hormonal.
Quick note:
While my work outside of DeRosa Medical is aimed at changing the paradigm of hormones and women’s health and beginning this hormone conversation with women in their 20s, we can still reverse a lot of problems even if women see us well into their 50s and even into their 60s. So, it’s not too late, as long as we start now!
